Siemens Energy Teams up With Duke Energy, Clemson University to Study Hydrogen Use

CLEMSON, S.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Siemens Energy, Duke Energy and Clemson University have teamed up to study the use of hydrogen for energy storage and as a low- or no-carbon fuel source to produce energy at Duke Energy’s combined heat and power plant located at Clemson University in South Carolina.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced today that it awarded Siemens Energy a $200,000 grant for the research initiative.

The pilot project, called H2-Orange – a nod to hydrogen gas and the collaboration with Clemson University – will ramp up in March 2021 and include studies on hydrogen production, storage and co-firing with natural gas.

The studies will evaluate multiple forms of hydrogen production, including green hydrogen, which is created from water and has no byproducts. Hydrogen also has the potential to store larger quantities of energy more efficiently and for longer durations than current lithium-ion battery technology.

“We look forward to developing an advanced hydrogen energy storage system to reduce the carbon footprint on the Clemson University campus, while optimizing the cost of energy for the campus and microgrid,” said Richard Voorberg, vice president of global service operations at Siemens Energy. “We want to be a driver of the energy transition, and this is a great step toward building reliable and efficient clean energy infrastructure in the U.S.”

This unique arrangement combines the experience, expertise and perspectives of Siemens Energy as the technology developer, Clemson University as the beneficiary and Duke Energy as the owner and operator of the asset.

Siemens Energy will study the use of its Silyzer electrolyzer to produce hydrogen fuel to help power the existing SGT-400 natural gas turbine at the Clemson plant. The Silyzer can use renewables and clean energy sources to create hydrogen without producing emissions. Clemson University will lead the integration of hydrogen into the campus grid and ensure energy needs are met, and Duke Energy will provide operational, engineering and grid modeling expertise. Duke Energy also expects the results of the study to be applicable to its larger combustion turbine fleet.

“Hydrogen integration is a possibility at many of our natural gas stations,” said Regis Repko, Duke Energy’s senior vice president and chief fossil/hydro officer. “The best way to innovate is through teamwork, and this research could influence the future of energy – reducing reliance on fossil fuels, decreasing energy costs and benefiting the environment and all energy users.”

For years, Duke Energy has actively evaluated hydrogen as a low- or no-carbon fuel source to help the company meet its bold net-zero carbon goal by 2050. Siemens Energy and Clemson University also have net-zero carbon goals to reach by 2030.

“This collaboration supports our institutional goal to be carbon neutral while advancing the development of energy technologies that could have far-reaching societal benefit,” said Tanju Karanfil, Clemson University vice president for research. “We are proud to collaborate with industry leaders Duke Energy and Siemens Energy and appreciate their interest in this project.”

Whether you require solutions in oil and gas, or power generation, we can offer high-quality components, engineering consultancy services, and field service engineering.

If you have yet to look into hiring outside consultants for your projects, you may be unfamiliar with field service engineering and what a field service engineer can offer. In this blog, RTS Corporation is looking at some of the details in field service engineering.

Strong and Varied Knowledge of Your Industry

Providing field service engineering means having a strong foundation of knowledge about many industry-specific engineering requirements as well as general standards and practices that apply across all industries. A skilled field service engineer must have a practical knowledge of the many different types of machinery and equipment they will encounter in their work.

A field service engineer is the person who is sent to repair equipment when it is damaged, defective, or no longer operational. This means they need to be able to know going in what they will need to do to assess and fix the issue in order to get operations back on track.

Competency and Skill

Field service engineers take this knowledge and combine it with the skills and experience necessary to put it to use in unique and demanding operational settings. Field service engineering is a hands-on career, and the engineer needs to be able to roll up their sleeves and get to work on a wide variety of equipment in an equally wide variety of scenarios. Exceptional practical skills and abilities, as well as a deep knowledge of industry-specific engineering, means getting the job done in a timely and reliable way.

Willingness to Travel and Adapt

Field service engineers are often required to travel extensively. This means that engineers need to be prepared for long and frequent trips for work and to act as an exemplary representative of their company when they are on the job. Depending on the kind of work, trips can be longer or shorter, and the locations can pose very different demands.

Engineers can quickly go from working in isolation, with the peace and quiet to focus on the job, to a busy environment where their ability to concentrate is tested to its limit. The key to field service engineering is the combination of knowledge with the ability and willingness to think fast and adapt to different working environments.

RTS Corporation on Safety in the Electrical Power Industry

RTS Corporation: Safety and the Electrical Power Industry

RTS Corporation provides engineering services and OEM equipment for the oil, gas, and power generation industries. With all of the experience that we have gained in working with a variety of clients in these industries, we have developed a deep understanding of how important safety is across many workplaces and industries.

Not just safety in equipment, but in processes, policy development, staff training, facility design and functionality, and much more. In this blog, RTS Corporation takes a closer look at some specifics for safety considerations in the electrical power generation industry.

OSHA and Related Regulations on Safety

Whatever industry you operate in, following OSHA regulations is essential if you are based in the United States. OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is part of the US Department of Labor and determines a variety of guidelines across all industries for the health and safety of American workers.

When it comes to industrial or manufacturing work, OSHA has a long list of highly specific standards and regulations. This includes anything from the condition and use of fixed ladders, to the storage and handling of volatile substances, to the operation of helicopters. You can find all of their industrial guidelines on their official website.

Workplace Hazards

For more general safety guidelines, RTS Corporation recommends you pay close attention to the environment your staff is working in. This is as true for an established facility as it is for one that is being planned. Neglecting safety, either through cutting corners or not being aware of hazards, is extremely dangerous.

For the electrical power industry, this includes factors such as the proper condition of cables and connections, along with the proper facility design considerations to ensure that cables and connections are fitted and secured safely. Keeping a facility clean and free of moisture and damp is vital too, as these can increase the risk of fire and electrocution. In order to avoid accidents, any tools related to maintenance must be kept away from the facility floor and industrial equipment must be secured properly when not in use.

Safety Gear and Staff Training

When it comes to accidents, providing the right safety gear for all staff — from the technicians on-site every day to administration officials touring the facility — is essential. Non-conductive equipment must be available, including helmets, gloves, footwear, eye protection, and insulated tools such as non-conductive rope.

Quality Equipment and Good Practices

The team at RTS Corporation would also like to stress the importance of quality in your equipment as it pertains to the safety of your facility. This does not just mean the quality of the machinery, but also of any all of the equipment and safety gear that your technicians and engineers will use. It also means their training. Proper safety training and adhering to industry-standard best practices is absolutely vital to the safety of your staff, the functioning of your facility, and the integrity of your operation.

Importance of Sustainability in Engineering Services

Providing the best in engineering services requires an in-depth understanding of the engineering industry. Whether it is oil and gas refining or power generation, the team at RTS Corporation is committed to staying at the forefront of engineering services.

Along with this, RTS Corporation is also dedicated to sustainability. Sustainable engineering services are vital across a wide variety of industries, and in this blog the professionals at RTS Corporation will explain why sustainability matters.

What Is Sustainable Engineering?

Sustainable engineering involves designing and managing systems to use resources in a way that is sustainable. Simply put, this means creating energy in a way that does not negatively impact our environment, or that minimizes or compensates for environmental impact.

The philosophy behind sustainable engineering, and the sustainability movement in general, is to preserve our environment for future generations. The aim of sustainable engineering services is to do this in a way that also does not impact the efficiency or productivity of industrial processes.

Pollution Prevention and Material Management

Pollution from industrial processes and manufacturing has been an issue for a long time, but the push to tackle it is relatively new in comparison to how long it has been going on. Part of the reason for this is that people’s awareness of our environmental impact has vastly increased over time. Another factor is that the technology to carry out industrial projects while minimizing harm to our environment simply was not there before.

Thanks to companies like RTS Corporation and related organizations, as well as a number of governmental and global initiatives, the push towards environmental protection has resulted in significant innovations. Improved technology and understanding has resulted in greener technology. Professional engineers with increased awareness have allowed for using these technologies in the most productive ways.

Accomplishments of the Sustainability Movement

To better illustrate this, we can give you a few examples of what the sustainability movement has achieved:

Green Materials

Green materials include things that can be recycled, reused, or have their supply easily replenished. The term “green materials” may also be used to refer to locally-sourced materials.

Water Conservation

Innovations in water conservation include low-flow plumbing and interior fixtures. Newer homes designed for water and energy conservation also offer savings when it comes to the cost of utilities.

Energy Efficiency

Sustainable engineering has led to extensive improvements in energy efficiency in everything from industrial applications to household electronics. Coupled with increased public awareness, the push towards better energy efficiency has helped save both money and resources.
